The MixC shopping mall in Shenzhen features an interesting Shuan Huo Guo restaurant in the top level next to the food court. This is one type of traditional Chinese way of eating. The name means (freely translated) "dip fire wok", which is to say that there is a pot of boiling spicy mixture in the center of the table and you cook your own meal by dipping meat and veggies in it.   There's actually two types of dipping going on during the meal. In addition to boiling your food in the hot pot, you also dip your food to a mix of spices, oil and sauces which you get to put together to your tastes! I really didn't know what I was doing but the dipping mix became really tasty anyway.   The choice of ingredients is plentiful and mostly prepared with chop sticks in mind. I tasted everything on the offer (which is obviously just a small section of what is on the menu) and must say I liked everything. The brownish red things on the above right picture are pig's blood by the way, which doesn't taste much by itself (a little like tofu actually) but is quite nice when mixed with spices.   The boiling pot... it's really nice to get everything fresh from the pot! Above right is my favorite - lamb meat. Thinly cut, it doesn't take long to cook and tastes delicious! I definitely recommend trying out Shuan Huo Guo if you get a chance! |

Actually there's plenty of yummy vegetarian food in China. Wen almost never cooks meat, I guess she mostly does it for me anyway. The western diet is very poor in the use of veggies if you compare to Chinese... at least in my experience.  |
